About The Composite:

I always dreamed of working at a magazine, helping to craft fashion and beauty culture and beyond. When I was a young consumer of these publications, they didn’t include people who looked like me or stories that challenged societal norms and expectations. So welcome to my version of the magazine, The Composite, which means “made up of different elements”. The main elements you’ll find here are books, bodies and culture. I write about what I read, the insidiousness of diet culture and beauty standards, fashion and its lack of inclusivity, and general pop culture at large.

If you subscribe, you can expect the following:

  • The Spread: A longer form weekly download of what I’ve been doing and what I’m recommending with a more personal touch

  • The Digest: A short form weekly sharing of all sorts of links that I think you’ll enjoy as much as I do, designed to replace your AM social media doom scroll

  • The One: A deeper dive into the one thing I think you should know about this week with accompanying article, podcast, and book recommendations

  • Monthly Reading Wrap Ups: A rundown and review of all the books I read every month

About me:

I live on a quiet, tree lined street in Brooklyn and work at a popular women’s media company in branded content / partnerships. I always dreamed of living in New York, and 5 years in I can say it has been the best decision of my life. I spent a few years working in fashion, particularly in size inclusive fashion, before making the switch to media. I am relentlessly passionate about changing the conversation and inviting more people to the table in the fashion and beauty industries. I am interested in anything that challenges societal norms and provides a more realistic + representative view of the world in media.

I’m a lifelong devourer of books and think reading is one of life’s greatest joys. We can learn so much about the lived experiences of other people through books, and there is so much community and pleasure to be found in being a reader.

I have a wonderful partner of 4 years and together we have a rambunctious and needy French Bulldog named Ramsay, after Gordon. We’re food lovers and Food Network lovers, obviously. I have often been compared to Ina Garten, which I take as the highest possible compliment.

Most of all, I’m so excited to find community in this space and to connect with you on issues that we share interest in. My inbox is always open, and you can also find me here on Instagram where I share more about my life and personal style.

See you soon,

Jo
